About Anaheim
Just 25 miles southeast of the city of Los Angeles is Anaheim, California. It sits near the Santa Ana River and was founded as an agricultural community. The area was part of the Rancho San Juan Cajón de Santa Ana land grant purchase and was settled in 1857 by German immigrants.
It was once known for wine until a disease destroyed most of the grape vineyards. By the 1950s, most of the community’s crops had disappeared. The opening of Disneyland in 1955 established Anaheim as a major vacation destination for families.
The city is also home to two professional sports teams, the Ducks from the NHL, and the Angels from the MLB. Anaheim has held an annual Halloween parade since 1924, but it lost popularity in the 1960s. It is also part of the metropolitan complex that also includes Irvine and Santa Ana. As of 2010, the Anaheim population was just over 330,000.
